Chairman Mao’s Memorial Hall

May 10, 2010 by · No Comments · China Travel Guide

Standing behind the Monument to the People’s Heroes is Chairman Mao’s mausoleum. Located in Tiananmen Square’s south side.

Chairman Mao’s Memorial Hall was built in only one year by teams of volunteers and inaugurated on 9th September1977, the first anniversary of his death, by his successor to the Communist Party leadership, Chairman Hua Guofeng. This imposing two-tiered edifice resting on a foundation of plum-colored Huagang stone is supported by 44 granite columns and topped by a flat roof of yellow glazed Liles. It bears a striking resemblance to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.

There are three main halls on the ground floor, one to the north, one to the south, and the Hall of Reverence in between. Entering the first, a vast reception area capable of accommodating over 600 people, the visitor will be confronted by a seated statue of Mao carved in white marble. Behind it hangs a painting of jinggangshan in jiangxi Province.

Inside the Hall of Reverence, the embalmed body of the late chairman draped with the red flag of the Chinese Communist Party lies in a crystal coffin. The dates ‘1893-1976′ are engraved in gold on a plaque.

Leaving the mausoleum by the south hall, the visitor will see a celebrated poem by the late Mao Zedong inscribed in gold on one of the walls. The walk-through will take less than Five minutes, since stopping is not allowed. Security is very strict, and handbags and cameras must be checked in before entry. There is no entrance fee.

A bustling shopping area near the exit of the hall on the south side of the building offers a wide range of new Mao memorabilia. For more valuable Mao souvenirs from the Cultural Revolution, visit the Panjiayuan market.

Tiananmen Square

May 10, 2010 by · No Comments · China Travel Guide

Tiananmen Square facing the Gate of Heavenly Peace-Tiananmen-is the heart of modern China. During the centuries of the Qing empire the square did not exist. There were originally buildings on either side of a central thoroughfare leading northwards to the entrance of the Imperial Palace. Gradually cleared during the first half of the 20th century, this huge area, covering about 40 hectares (98 acres), has witnessed both triumphant and traumatic events. Important political demonstrations first took place there during the Republic (1911-49). On 1 October 1949, Chairman Mao proclaimed the establishment of the People’s Republic of China from the rostrum of the Gate of Heavenly Peace. Twenty-seven years later, the Tiananmen Incident-when masses demonstrated their affection for the late premier, Zhou Enlai-heralded the end of the Cultural Revolution, and the downfall of the Gang of Four.
The Gate of Heavenly Peace itself is an imposing long red structure with a double roof of yellow tiles on the northern side of the square. Tourists are allowed co enter the gate and climb to the rostrum from which emperors once handed down edicts. Besides being steeped with historical significance, this rostrum, overlooking the museums of Chinese History and Revolution, Tiananmen, and the Great Hall of the People, provides one of the finest views of Beijing. Open from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m., with the last tickets sold at 5.00 p.m., it is best to visit as early or late as possible, so one may reflect profoundly upon both the triumphs, and the tragedies, of China’s long march from the humiliations of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries towards what seems inevitable super-power status: once again.
On either side of the gate’s rear portion are two parks. To the east is the Working People’s Cultural Palace. Over 550 years old, this was an imperial ancestral temple and now contains a park, a library, a gymnasium and other recreational facilities. On the western side is Zhongshan Park, dedicated Lo Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the leader of the 1911 Revolution and founder of modern China.
On the eastern side of Tiananmen Square are two large museums, the Museum of Chinese History and the Museum of the Chinese Revolution.
In the center of the square is the Monument to the People’s Heroes, an obelisk in memory of those who died for the revolution, with inscriptions by Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, as well as a dozen stone carvings.
At the far southern end of the square (beyond Chairman Mao’s Memorial Hall, his mausoleum) is Qianmen, or Front Gate, a massive double gate which controlled entry to the northern section of the city. The Hall is occasionally used for concerts, although its acoustics are not world-class.

Tiananmen is the signal of China, is the most important Beijing Attractions, is a must to visitors. If you’re know more Chinese History and Culture, you can join a Beijing Bus Tour.

For over 2,000 years, historians and archaeologists both at home and abroad have been on scene to unveil the mysteries of the Silk Road, a traffic passage, which started in Xi’an, the capital of Northwest China’s Shaanxi Travel and ran westward for about 7,000 kilometres, through the western regions and provinces of China, on into several Central Asian countries before stretching down to Rome in the Mediterranean. The Silk Road runs through many time-honoured cultures and civilizations in China, Asia Minor, India and the Persian Gulf, Greece and Italy. But it has left so many interestin9subjects only a little light on a certain episode of its history. The early Chinese civilization already reached a very high standard more than 2,000 years ago. Chinese government emissaries, traders and pious monks used to set out from Chang’an (former name for Xi’an Travel) in their journeys through the (Gansu)Hexi Corridor (also known as the Silk Road Corridor), accounting for one-sixth of the total length of the Silk Road, along the rim of Taklamakan-the second largest desert of the world and across the Congling (Onion) Mountains in Wastern Xinjiang till they :.reached Western countries. The trade caravans were loaded mainly with silks and satins-valuables invented and manufactured in China, as high officials and nobles of the West took pride in putting on gorgeous Chinese silken robes. The silks so captured the fancy of people that this road came to be known as the famous Silk Road in the entire world.
